ServiceNow's Earnings Face a Crossroads of AI Promise and Government Weakness

As ServiceNow prepares to report first-quarter results after the market close on April 22, the company presents a study in contrasts. Its stock trades near $102, a stark 51% decline from its 52-week high of $208.94 reached in July 2025, even as management touts a newly expanded total addressable market of $600 billion.

The immediate financial picture is mixed. Analysts expect revenue of $3.75 billion, representing year-over-year growth of approximately 21%. The consensus for earnings per share stands at $0.95. For the full year, ServiceNow has raised its subscription revenue guidance to a range of $15.53 billion to $15.57 billion, implying growth of 19.5% to 20% on a constant currency basis.

A significant headwind has emerged in the public sector, where U.S. federal government orders plummeted dramatically during the first quarter. This weakness compounds pressure from the ongoing shift of customer systems from on-premise hosting to the cloud, which is squeezing profitability.

Margin compression remains a key concern for investors. The company's non-GAAP subscription gross margin fell to 82.5% in the fourth quarter, down from 84.5% a year earlier. Management has cited rising AI infrastructure costs as a primary cause and is targeting a margin of 82% for 2026.

Against this challenging backdrop, ServiceNow is aggressively pushing its artificial intelligence narrative. The company recently unveiled a series of new "agentic AI" products aimed at specific industries. In partnership with Xactly, it launched a Dispute Management AI Agent designed to automate sales commission disputes within a single AI-driven interaction.

Simultaneously, at the Hannover Messe industrial fair, ServiceNow presented a manufacturing-focused AI suite. It includes a Configure-Price-Quote Agent for voice-based product configuration and a Parts Management AI Agent to automate billing and prevent revenue loss. These launches are part of a broader offensive that the company plans to expand at its Knowledge 2026 conference in Las Vegas this May.

The market is watching to see if this product momentum translates into financial results. In the last reported quarter, ServiceNow's generative AI suite, Now Assist, more than doubled its net new annual contract value. The company logged 244 deals with a net new ACV over $1 million, roughly 40% more than the prior year. Whether this pace can be sustained is a central question for the earnings call.

Analyst sentiment reflects the current tension. Oppenheimer's Brian Schwartz predicts AI services could contribute over 10% of total revenue by the end of 2026, a landmark for the software industry. Nonetheless, he recently lowered his price target to $130, citing industry-wide valuation compression. Other firms have followed suit; Deutsche Bank cut its target to $135, while TD Cowen reduced its to $140, though both maintain buy ratings.

The stock's valuation remains a point of contention. With a price-to-sales multiple of 22, ServiceNow trades at a significant premium to the broader software sector. The recent guidance hike failed to reassure the market, leaving the share price languishing.

Tonight's report will force a reckoning. Investors will scrutinize subscription revenue growth, the trajectory of AI monetization, and management's commentary on the federal sales slump and margin outlook. The results will show whether ServiceNow's expansive AI vision can overcome immediate fiscal and competitive pressures in a market growing increasingly skeptical of premium valuations.
