Rational Rose Wins Editor's Choice Award From Java Developer's Journal

LEXINGTON, Mass., Jan. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Rational Software (Nasdaq: RATL), the e-development company,
today announced that Rational Rose, its market-leading visual modeling tool, has won its second straight Editor's
Choice Award from Java Developer's Journal for Best Java Modeling Tool.

Winners of the Java Developer's Journal awards are selected by the editor-in-chief by reviewing nominations and
consulting with other editors of the publication. Product winners are acknowledged on the contributions they made in
developing Java-based solutions that respond to and meet the increasing demands of technology.

"It's very gratifying to receive this honor from Java Developer's Journal for the second year in a row," said Roger
Oberg, vice president and general manager of Rose visual modeling products for Rational Software. "Constructing
e-business applications is a complex effort, and Rational Rose helps development teams overcome the complexity to
build software with greater speed and reliability. With our recently announced Enterprise JavaBean (EJB) support in
Rational Rose 2000, Rose will provide an even richer environment for designing and deploying e-business
applications." About Rational Rose

Rational Rose provides the power of visual modeling, component-based development, and round-trip engineering,
along with unmatched support for the Unified Modeling Language (UML). Companies that are faced with having to
quickly develop and deliver high-quality e-business applications are finding that Rational Rose helps them: build better
software faster; identify, manage, and control change; and improve communication among the whole project team.
About Rational Software Corporation

Rational Software Corporation, the e-development company, helps organizations develop and deploy software for
e-business, e-infrastructure, and e-devices through a combination of tools, services and software engineering best
practices. Rational's e-development solution helps organizations overcome the e-software paradox by accelerating
time to market while improving quality. Rational's integrated solution simplifies the process of acquiring, deploying and
supporting a comprehensive software development platform, reducing total cost of ownership. International Data
Corporation (IDC) has recognized Rational as the leader in multiple segments of the software development life-cycle
management market for three years in a row. Founded in 1981, Rational, one of the world's largest Internet software
companies, had revenues of $411 million in its fiscal year that ended in March, 1999 and employs more than 2,000
around the world.

NEW YORK, Jan 13 (Reuters) - Shares of Rational Software Corp. rose to a new 52-week high on
Thursday, after the maker of programming tools reported third-quarter profits and revenues that beat analysts'
projections.

Shares of Lexington, Mass.-based traded on Thursday morning at 54-13/16, up 6 percent, or 3-1/4, after touching a
high of 56-3/16 earlier. Volume was 1.8 million, double its daily average.

Rational on Wednesday reported third-quarter net income of 27 cents a diluted share, compared with 20 cents a year
ago. Revenue for the third quarter was $146.2 million, up from $109.1 million.

Wall Street analysts had been expecting profits of about 25 cents a share and revenues near $141 million, analysts
said.

Analysts cheered the results on Thursday, and upgraded their views on Rational's stock.

Credit Suisse First Boston analyst Wendell Laidley lifted his 12-month price target to $71 a share from $52.
"Rational's strong position within the "eBusiness and Internet development market is clearly driving top-line
acceleration," he said in a note to clients. Laidley also reiterated his strong buy rating.

First Albany analyst Damian Rinaldi raised his rating on Rational to strong buy from buy and set a $75 target.

Rational said its business continues to accelerate as more companies build software for the Internet and leverage the
benefits of rational development systems.

The company also announced on Wednesday that it was working with Intel Corp. to develop software
for the Internet using the Linux operating system.

Re: Rational software [RATL/893124] 1. Analyst Tim Klasell von Dain Rauscher Wessels stufte die Aktie der Rational Software von Buy auf Strong Buy hoch,

2. Analyst Robert T. Christensen von First Albany Corp. von stufte die Aktie der Rational Software von Buy auf Strong Buy hoch,
12-Monats-Kursziel. 75 US-Dollar.
