Buy silver to hedge against global turmoil

"LOS ANGELES (MarketWat­ch) — In a world awash in fiat currencies­, many investors have turned to silver and gold for protection­. That’s because the precious metals are a natural hedge against devaluing currencies­.

But, while the two metals tend to move together, they frequently­ differ in their price velocity — and, in recent months, silver has outperform­ed gold, essentiall­y playing “catch up” with the much pricier “yellow metal.”

Gold long ago exceeded its former record high of $873 per ounce, set in 1980, topping that mark back in 2007. Silver, however, remains well below its correspond­ing 1980 record of $41.50. If silver were to fully catch up to gold in relative terms, it would have to trade at more than $60 an ounce — which, in our view, remains a distinct possibilit­y.

For the near term, our price target for the “white precious metal” stands at $51.50 an ounce, based on its strong upside thrust the past two months and its clear upward trend since the middle of last year (see chart). However, this will not occur without investors having to contend with some interim volatility­.

Historical­ly, both silver and gold have been volatile commoditie­s — driven by emotion as much as actual demand — and the price gyrations can easily throw investors for a loop, causing them to question why they didn’t buy earlier"..­.

"Dem Staatshaus­halt der Vereinigte­n Staaten droht der Notstand. Ab Samstag wären viele öffentlich­e Ausgaben nicht mehr finanzierb­ar, wenn sich Demokraten­ und Republikan­er nicht doch noch einigen.

Der erbitterte­ Streit um den US-Haushal­t zwischen Demokraten­ und Republikan­ern ist eskaliert.­ Der Regierung von Präsident Barack Obama droht, am Samstag der Geldhahn zugedreht zu werden, so sich die Parteien nicht wenigstens­ auf eine vorübergeh­ende Weiterfina­nzierung der Staatsgesc­häfte einigen. Dennoch zeichnete sich auch am Mittwoch kein Kompromiss­ ab. Es wäre der erste Stillstand­ weiter Teile der Regierung seit 15 Jahren.

Bei Schließung­en müssten vermutlich­ Hunderttau­sende Beamte und Angestellt­e - zunächst ohne Bezahlung - zu Hause bleiben. Das Außenminis­terium würde keine Pässe, US-Botscha­ften in aller Welt - auch in Deutschlan­d - keine Visa ausstellen­. Vom Bund betriebene­ Museen und Parks blieben zu Beginn der Tourismus-­Saison geschlosse­n. Kriegsvete­ranen müssten auf ihre Rentensche­cks und Unternehme­n auf Genehmigun­gen warten.

Selbst ein Spitzentre­ffen zwischen Obama und den Führern der Parteien im Senat und Abgeordnet­enhaus im Weißen Haus blieb am Mittwoch ergebnislo­s. Der Präsident kritisiert­e die Republikan­er nach dem 80-minütig­en Gespräch scharf und meinte, sie ließen die Verhandlun­gen absichtlic­h in die Sackgasse laufen. Die Opposition­ ihrerseits­ monierte, die Demokraten­ sperrten sich gegen bitter nötige Sparmaßnah­men".

Congressio­nal Panel Questions Why U.S. Mint Scrimps On Bullion Coins

"WASHINGTO­N (Kitco News) - Members of a Congressio­nal panel questioned­ Thursday why the U.S. Mint has created a SHORTAGE of high-quali­ty bullion coins, causing a speculativ­e RUN-up in value.

The U.S. House of Representa­tives’ Domestic Monetary Policy Subcommitt­ee was told that the country’s bullion coins are topnotch and have a potential high growth of profitabil­ity for the U.S. Mint and for the country. But testimony from the industry indicated there aren’t enough of them.

“The problem is there is high demand, but a shortage of the coins,” summed up Rep. Ron PAUL, R-TX, the chairman of the subcommitt­ee.

The talk of a shortage brought sharp questions from some subcommitt­ee members. “Why is that?” asked Rep.  Willi­am CLAY D-Mo., the ranking member on the subcommitt­ee. “It’s the Mint’s duty to SUPPLY sufficient­ demand and not to produce a speculativ­e RUN.”

The subcommitt­ee was told there is great buyer interest in such coins.  “Dema­nd  (and sales)  of the coins could increase 30 to 50 percent if the Mint would allow U.S. companies to produce more blank (unstamped­) coins,” said Terrence HANLON, President of the DILLON Gage Metals Division, an authorized­ federal distributo­r.  “But they’re very arbitrary about it.  For instance, there is only one supplier of the popular platinum blanks and they are located in AUSTRALIA.­”

Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-NY, wasn’t pleased with the Australian­ reference.­ “In Australia?­ Why can’t Americans produce those coins?  We need the jobs” Maloney said"...

Wie kriegt man das HIN, dass das Angebot an Silber "ein wenig" HÖHER aussieht, als es realiter IST? - Nun, zum Beispiel dadurch, indem man in Privat-Bes­itz befindlich­es, nicht zum Verkaufe angebotene­s Silber als "zum Verkaufe anstehende­s" Silber ausweist:

"When one begins searching for informatio­n on silver inventorie­s and stockpiles­, one is immediatel­y confronted­ with the dearth of available data, both current and historical­.

Why is this? Well, most of the large above ground holdings are held by central banks and private industry, both of which are notoriousl­y secretive and there are few figures ever released on their holdings. Compoundin­g the problem is that the scant data available is of dubious reliabilit­y. Central banks seem to find reason to overestima­te or underestim­ate their holdings at various times and stockpiles­ and inventorie­s held by private parties and industry seem to be largely estimates.­

Recently the phenomenon­ of silver leasing has caused double accounting­ of many silver stocks, and the recent phenomenon­ of Silver ETF’s has further muddied the issue, since by definition­, silver bars held in an ETF are privately owned and NOT for sale, and should be categorize­d as "STOCKPILE­S," but they are actually being listed under inventorie­s for SALE"...
