Torrington clean energy company takes steps forward in its expansion plan
"TORRINGTON The Planning & Zoning Commission approved an application for a temporary modular office trailer to be added to the FuelCell Energy, Inc. building located at 539 Technology Park Dr. during the board’s regular meeting Wednesday night.
Gordon S. Brooks, director of plant engineering and EHS at FuelCell, submitted the application on behalf of the company and explained the need for this temporary structure stems from a larger plan to expand their current building in the future. The modular office trailer will accommodate new professional staff as these plans move forward.
City Planner Martin Connor explained the project through a memo to the commission. It was his recommendation to approve the temporary office trailer. The commission did indeed approve the temporary structure.
“They don’t have enough space. Isn’t that great?” Connor said.
Connor commented that this is a positive because it means more jobs in Torrington.
FuelCell, “is an integrated fuel cell company that designs, manufactures, installs, operates and services stationary fuel cell power plants,” according to the company’s website.
FuelCell is a, “leading global fuel cell company.”
The company’s headquarters is located in Danbury and their manufacturing facility resides in Torrington.
The future addition could possibly double the size of their current plant building.
The temporary office trailer, which will measure 24 feet by 64 feet, will attach to another temporary trailer that currently sits on the property. The first trailer was approved in May 2007. Connor explained in his memo that the temporary structure meets the required setbacks for the IP, Industrial Park Zone, where the plant is located, and no additional parking or site improvements are required.
Representatives from FuelCell were not immediately available to comment on their new addition.
The state’s Clean Energy Finance and Investment Authority recently gave a $5.5 million long-term loan to FuelCell to build cells that will be used in a Bridgeport based generation plant. The loan will help FuelCell add or sustain at least 150 jobs." Less

Is it Smart to Invest in Green & Eco-Friendly Stocks?
The socially conscious investor will find a wide range of Eco-friendly stocks and mutual funds to choose from, both small and large. Due to the influence of world-wide concern over global pollution and carbon dioxide, the investor will find many large corporations are snapping up green companies to add to their list of products.
A recent acquisition by Royal Philips Electronics (headquartered in the Netherlands) of Color Kinetics, trading on the NASDAQ as CLRK is a great example. Color Kinetics was a ten-year-old company that produced environmentally friendly lighting through its enhancement of the LED (light-emitting-diode) technology to create a new type of illumination. Color Kinetics utilized digitalized technology to create a new source of controllable illumination.
The merger between the giant Philips and Color Kinetics will enhance its Philips Lighting Solutions market in the LED technology. Color Kinetic has existing installations world wide and a huge customer list, with relationships in China and the UK. Philips, in turn will, provide its 60-country-presence to the Eco-friendly technology of Color Kinetics. Investors should not rule large conglomerates in their search for Eco-friendly stock.
Small Cap Companies: For investors that enjoy investing directly in small cap companies there are numerous opportunities for investors in AMEX. These stocks are very reasonable in price and may provide future gains as going green becomes an integral part of business and not just a slogan. I have watched some Eco-friendly companies grow over the past several years and the following is a highlight of some interesting stocks.
Environmental Power Corp. trades under the ticker EPG on the AMEX exchange. This stock currently sells in the $5 range. The company and its subsidiaries engage in the ownership, development and operation of renewable energy facilities in the United States. EPG owns 83 leasehold of land. It has plants that utilize animal and food industry waste to produce bio-mass and other forms of alternative fuel that utilize their renewable energy biogas.
A good reason to give this company a good look is that it filed a notice with the SEC that it has a firm commitment from an underwriter to make and offering of over four million shares of his stock. If the offering goes forward the company could realize a gain in the price as well as an infusion of over 22 million dollars. There is another stock that has great promise in the fuel cell area. This area has room to grow. I particularly like Fuel Cell Energy.
It trades under the stock ticker FCEL. The company has a market cap of approximately 650 million. The company is in the development, manufacturing and sale of fuel cells power plants for use in electrical power plants. Its pipeline products are geared for use in health care facilities, hotels, hospitals, universities, governmental offices and water treatment centers.
The company is located in Connecticut with office in Korea, Japan, Canada and Europe. This $9 stock has no where to go but up in the long term. Another reason to think twice about this company is the major holders of stock in the company. Wells Fargo Bank, Barclays, Deutsche Bank and other prominent funds are invested in FCEL. A stock that is a good value, but lacks appreciation is Calgon Carbon Corp. in Pennsylvania. The company trades under the ticker CCC.

Hydrogen Infrastructure Project Launches in USA

After months of rumour and speculation surrounding the formation of a hydrogen infrastructure project in the USA, the US Department of Energy (DOE) has finally confirmed the launch of H2USA. The public-private partnership brings together the hydrogen and fuel cell industries, along with automakers, government agencies and gas suppliers to advance the development of a hydrogen infrastructure in the USA.
Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy David Danielson said “Fuel cell technologies are an important part of an all-of-the-above approach to diversify America’s transportation sector, reduce our dependence on foreign oil and increase our competitiveness in the global market. By bringing together key stakeholders from across the U.S. fuel cell and hydrogen industry, the H2USA partnership will help advance affordable fuel cell electric vehicles that save consumers money and give drivers more options.”
The development of shale gas reserves in the USA has already contributed to lower electricity and transportation costs and is expected to be a driver for the production of cheap hydrogen. H2USA will bring together the necessary experts to identify and solve key infrastructure challenges, including leveraging low cost natural gas resources.
Current members of H2USA include the American Gas Association, Association of Global Automakers, the California Fuel Cell Partnership, the Electric Drive Transportation Association, the Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Energy Association, Hyundai Motor America, ITM Power, Massachusetts Hydrogen Coalition, Mercedes-Benz USA, Nissan North America Research and Development, Proton OnSite, and Toyota Motor North America.

Dresden – Das auf saubere Energieversorgung spezialisierte indisch-amerikanische Unternehmen Mayur REnergy Solutions wird mit dem Fraunhofer-Institut für Keramische Technologien und Systeme IKTS Festoxid-Brennstoffzellen für die Märkte in Entwicklungsländern entwickeln. Ein entsprechendes Abkommen wurde bereits im Januar 2013 getroffen, teilte das Fraunhofer IKTS nun mit. Ziel der Zusammenarbeit ist die Entwicklung effizienter und umweltfreundlicher Brennstoffzellensysteme zu ortsüblichen Preisen, mit denen die angespannte Stromsituation in Indien und anderen Entwicklungsländern nachhaltig gelöst werden soll. Dr. Christian Wunderlich, Abteilungsleiter Industrialisierung Energiesysteme am Fraunhofer IKTS, plant die Errichtung eines bisher meist fehlenden dezentralisierten Stromerzeugungsnetzes. Vorgesehen sind Mikrokraftanlagen zur Installation im Haushalt. Im Rahmen dieses vielversprechenden Projekts entwickelt das Fraunhofer IKTS Prototypen, die auf dem bereits eingeführten eneramic®-Brennstoffzellensystem basieren. Dieses soll nun für höhere Leistungsklassen angepasst werden.

Dieser Typ Brennstoffzelle ist auch für Elektromobilität interessant.

Bei einem weiteren vom BMBF geförderten Projekt wird ein linearer Fresnel-Kollektor errichtet, der Prozesswärme bis 200 Grad Celsius erzeugen kann. Bei diesem Kollektortyp sind Herstellung, Nachführung und Wartung einfacher als bei den gekrümmten Konzentratoren. Auf der Basis des Know-hows der Fraunhofer ISE Forscher wurde ein an die indische Produktion angepasster Prototyp entwickelt, der nun in einem Versuchskraftwerk vermessen werden soll.
Seit knapp zwei Jahren unterstützen die deutschen Wissenschaftler ihre indischen Kollegen zudem mit Simulation und Evaluation beim Projekt IndiaOne. Hier wird ein solarthermisches Kraftwerk mit einem Megawatt elektrischer Leistung auf Basis der Scheffler-Reflektortechnologie aufgebaut, um Strom- und Wärme für den Brahma Kumaris Talheti Komplex in Rajasthan bereit zu stellen.

die zeigt, dass sich die institutionellen Anleger noch so lange zurückhalten, bzw. mit absolut lächerlich geringen Stückzahlen investiert sind, bis FuelCell positive Zahlen vorweisen kann. Das wird aller Voraussicht nach noch Ende dieses Jahres oder spätestens Anfang 2014 der Fall sein. Sollte es in diesem Jahr noch Abschlüsse über insgesamt 50MW kommen, kann die Rakete noch in diesem Jahr starten. Hyundai ist mit dem Energy Department vereint auf einer neuen öffentlich-privaten Partnerschaft genannt H2USA, die auf die Weiterentwicklung von Wasserstoff-Infrastruktur, um mehr Verkehr Energie-Optionen für US-Verbraucher, einschließlich Brennstoffzellen-Elektrofahrzeuge (FCEVs) unterstützt konzentrieren. Benannt nach dem chemischen Zeichen für Wasserstoff, bringt das H2USA Partnerschaft zusammen Regierungsstellen, Gasversorger, die Wasserstoff-und Brennstoffzellen-Industrie und Autohersteller wie Mercedes-Benz, Nissan und Toyota.
Während die amerikanischen Autohersteller und der privaten Wirtschaft erhebliche Fortschritte gemacht haben, wird H2USA bringen Experten zusammen, um Key-Infrastruktur Herausforderungen, darunter die Nutzung Low-Cost-Erdgas-Ressourcen zu lösen. Durch das Programm wird der Industrie und staatlichen Partnern identifizieren Aktionen Early Adopters von Brennstoffzellen-Elektrofahrzeugen zu fördern, führen koordiniert technische und Marktanalyse und bewerten alternative Versorgungsinfrastruktur, die Kostensenkungen und Größenvorteile ermöglichen können.
"Brennstoffzellen-Technologien sind ein wichtiger Teil einer all-of-the-obigen Ansatz, um Amerikas Verkehrssektor zu diversifizieren, verringern unsere Abhängigkeit von ausländischem Öl und erhöhen unsere Wettbewerbsfähigkeit auf dem globalen Markt", sagte Assistant Secretary für Energieeffizienz und erneuerbare Energien, David Danielson in der Energie-Abteilung in der Pressemitteilung. "Durch die Zusammenführung von wichtigen Akteuren in den USA Brennstoffzelle und Wasserstoff Industrie, wird die Partnerschaft H2USA helfen Voraus bezahlbaren Brennstoffzellen-Elektrofahrzeuge, dass die Verbraucher Geld sparen und geben Fahrer mehr Möglichkeiten."
Hyundai stellt derzeit einen Brennstoffzellen-betriebene Version des Tucson mit dem Ziel, den Verkauf von 1.000 Einheiten im Jahr 2015, wenn es die nächste Generation Tucson und Ziel jährlichen Produktion von rund 10.000 Einheiten startet.
"Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell Programm ist ein integraler Bestandteil unseres Plans, low-carbon, sparsamere Fahrzeuge, die den Kraftstoffverbrauch zu minimieren und die Kohlendioxid-Emissionen zu entwickeln", sagte Gil Castillo, Senior Group Manager, alternative Fahrzeug-Strategie, Hyundai Motor America.
