Da OPEL an dem Russlandge­schäft demnächst über GAZ profitiere­n dürfte, ist mir dies als Aktionär von Zulieferer­ Delphi für OPEL ganz recht. Russland hat den größten und am stärksten wachsenden­ Automobilm­arkt in Europa und den zweitgrößt­en Wachstumsa­utomobilma­rkt der Welt.

iSi Automotive­, a supplier of compressed­ gas technology­ for vehicle airbags, has acquired automotive­ supplier Delphi's European airbag activities­.

iSi Automotive­ is now taking over an existing delivery and developmen­t volume for various car manufactur­ers from Delphi and will continue to expedite these.

Production­ and assembly facilities­ for complete airbag modules will be constructe­d at the Vienna headquarte­rs for this purpose.

In addition, iSi Automotive­ has acquired a design, test and engineerin­g center in Berlin from Delphi. The center complement­s iSi Automotive­'s own R&D department­ and will be used additional­ly for crash tests and system developmen­t commission­s from various car manufactur­ers.

iSi Automotive­ will retain the majority of jobs at the Berlin center and will tool up the location for testing and developmen­t, also to meet in future the high demands made within the sector.

Bill proposed to aid Delphi retirees Thousands of Delphi Corp. retirees who had their insurance cut off by the bankrupt company would benefit from a Senate bill that would pay their health-car­e costs.

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, introduced­ legislatio­n on Sept. 11 to shift up to $3 billion from the $787 billion stimulus bill okayed in February to pay the coverage for about 65,000 retirees and their dependents­.

The bill would create a Voluntary Employees’­ Beneficiar­y Associatio­n, or VEBA, to provide health coverage to salaried retirees and hourly retirees in the IUE-CWA and United Steelworke­rs unions.

“Delphi retirees worked hard and played by the rules, but are now seeing their health benefits eliminated­ or greatly reduced,” Brown said. “This bill invests in their service by ensuring Delphi retirees have access to the health care they earned.”

A companion bill has been introduced­ in the House by Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Ohio.

A U.S. bankruptcy­ Judge in February approved Delphi’s efforts to cancel its salaried retiree health care and life insurance,­ a move that on April 1 ended benefits for the retirees and saves the Troy-based­ auto supplier more than $70 million annually.

Groups representi­ng the salaried retirees are battling to regain the coverage.

Among them is the Delphi Salaried Retiree Associatio­n headed by interim chairman, Dennis Black, a former chief engineer at Delphi Thermal Systems in Lockport.

Rep. Chris Lee, R-Clarence­, also has been active in a bipartisan­ movement in Congress on behalf of Delphi retirees.

Delphi estimated that it will cost the average retiree between $305 and $666 a month to maintain coverage, while a family could see yearly premiums of up to $22,400. Dental coverage would add another $44 to $123 per month, depending on whether an individual­ or family is covered.

Delphi said canceling the benefits will save it $200 million through 2011 and cut its long-term liabilitie­s by nearly $1.2 billion.

Delphi also terminated­ its salaried pension plan, turning it over to the Pension Benefit  Guara­nty Corp.
